When the Job Calls for the Big Truck
The 5-ton is the truck for productions that can't afford to run out of gear. Features, larger commercials, multi-day shoots, and any job rigging big overheads — this is the package with the depth to cover it: twenty C-stands, a full run of combo and high stands, and frames from 8x8 up to 20x20 with silks, ultrabounces, and griffs to match.
Like every Photon truck, the 5-ton comes with a Photon gaffer who knows the pack, drives the truck, and keeps your set moving. Based in Richmond, we run the 5-ton across Virginia and the Mid-Atlantic — and if your production needs lighting, a generator, a jib, or additional crew, it's all available on the same booking.
Not sure you need this much truck? For leaner shoots, look at the 3-ton.

HOW PRODUCTIONS USE IT
Feature crews book the 5-ton for the depth — when day three calls for a 20x20 over a backyard and twelve C-stands are already working, the truck still has more. Larger commercials use it as a rolling G&E department, and multi-day productions like that it arrives counted and organized, with a gaffer who knows exactly where everything lives. It's also the right truck when weather or locations demand options: big rags, big stands, and enough hardware to rig what the location throws at you. Working beyond Richmond? The 5-ton travels — Northern Virginia, Hampton Roads, Charlottesville, DC — with travel terms quoted per production.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
-
Rule of thumb: if your shoot involves overheads bigger than 12x12, more than ten C-stands working at once, or multiple days where gear needs keep growing, book the 5-ton. Interviews, small commercials, and single-location days are usually happy on the 3-ton — and we're glad to talk through your shoot and recommend honestly.
-
Yes. Trucks are driven to your location by your Photon gaffer, billed at $2.10/mile from our Richmond base. For most Virginia locations that's a straightforward line item — tell us your location when you request a quote and we'll give you the exact number.
-
Every Photon truck comes with a Photon crew member who drives the truck, knows the package inside out, and works your shoot — as your gaffer, or as an electrician or grip if you've got the gaffer covered. The crew member is engaged directly by the production, and the rate is quoted separately. Need more G&E for the shoot? Bring it up when you request a quote.

Mileage runs $2.10/mile from Richmond. For shoots beyond the immediate region, production is responsible for the gaffer's travel days, lodging, and meals — standard practice for out-of-town crew. Multi-day and multi-week rates are available: the longer the run, the more room we have to work with you on the package.

We require a certificate of insurance covering the rented equipment, naming Photon Grip & Electric as additionally insured. Most production insurance policies handle this in a quick email with your broker. Booking without production insurance? Contact us and we'll talk through options.
